Desktop - The Audacity conduits and support programs are designed to work with desktops running a Microsoft operating system. However, we do have many MAC users. There are three limitations using a MAC. The first is the files must be transferred to the MAC using a card reader. The second is compressed files can't be used as the decompression algorithm can't be run on the MAC. The third is the Audacity handheld support applications, like LAM and Transcriber, are PC based.

PDA Hardware- The Audacity applications are only available for select PDA's. We will make every effort to keep this list updated as new models become available. Please do not purchase software for a model not listed. If you think Audacity will work on an unlisted model, try the demo software before you purchase.

SD Cards- If you plan to record to external memory (the SD card), make sure that the SD card chosen will read / write fast enough to work with the PDA you will be using and the audio type you choose. Higher quality audio types (like PCM 22 kHz) take up a lot of memory and the SD card needs to be fast to keep up. On the opposite side, the compressed Audacity Audio types are very efficient and create small files. Consequently, it is much easier for a slow card to work. SD cards and related hardware vary tremendously in the speed at which they operate. We recommend a high-speed card. If possible, it is best to try before you buy. Audacity Audio has a free utility to test the read / write speed of any SD card. Run the test 4 times and see if the results are consistent and fast. Click this link to learn more about SD cards and to get our free CardSpeed test utility.

PC Operating System - Audacity is compatible with Windows 98 and above operating systems.
